Before the electric vehicle boom, most cars used traditional lead-acid starter batteries charged by the alternator while driving. These batteries were inexpensive and provided sufficient power for the starter but were heavy due to the lead content and required regular maintenance.
A significant drawback of conventional flooded lead-acid batteries was water evaporation, which shortened their lifespan and required periodic refilling. This issue was addressed with AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) technology, where the electrolyte is absorbed into a glass fiber mat, making the battery more durable and maintenance-free.
AGM batteries are sealed, can be used in any position, require no regular maintenance, and generally have a longer service life. However, care must be taken during charging to avoid excessive gas buildup, and each cell is equipped with a safety valve to regulate internal pressure.
